Thats interesting Mark,

I'm wondering if you or anyone else has come across a time frame for the implementation of this part of the Order, if indeed one has been published. My concern would be, how it will implemented and how soon, it would be a shame if it dragged on with little activity for an extended period of time. It would also be a shame if it is poorly planned and if they do not seek the input of external groups such as Irl-DeAN.

I'd be curious to hear from others who may be involved in the establishment of such a Centre, and I wonder if anyone has anyone any suggestions as to how we can be more proactive in influencing its future activities/directions.

Thanks Mark, for bringing the issue to everyones attention.

Talk soon,

Subject: [Irl-dean] NDA Centre of Excellence in Universal Design
Importance: Low

>From Public Affairs Ireland Update:

The Minister of State at the Department of Justice, Equality and Law
Reform, Frank Fahey TD signed a Commencement Order bringing provisions
of the Disability Act 2005 into operation last week. The Order ...
provides for the establishment of a Centre for Excellence in Universal
Design in the NDA.

Be interesting to see what kind of a resource that turns out to be. I
imagine it's pretty much up for grabs at the moment and thoughts on what
its role and activities will be are probably at an early stage within
the NDA. This might give us an opportunity to influence it.

Personally, I would very much like to see it looking at best practice in
ICT accessibility internationally and bringing it into Ireland. This
would involve carrying out research into accessibility solutions for
things like ATMs, eVoting, etc. and giving guidance to government and
industry on how to develop and promote these solutions within an Irish
context.

Anyone else got any thoughts on what this Centre of Excellence might do
for us?

Mark
