How do people feel about screen resolution these days?

Obviously the standard for a long time was the 800 * 600 page layout
format.

Personally, I am still quite happy with that, what do people think?

It seems to me there are two arguments:

(a) The % using 800*600 is going down (approx 16%) and that if 81%
have monitors with a higher screen resolution then it is ok to have a
layout designed for 1024 width.

Or

(b) 16% is still quite high and what people assume is that if your
monitor is bigger then you will always have your browser maximised,
which is not always the case (or possibly rarely the case?). The
benefits of higher screen resolutions is that people can have multiple
windows open (and visible) – be it multiple browser windows and/ or
other applications.

Ideally people should use relative page widths that span across windows
of all sides but failing that..what do people think? I fall into the (b)
group myself..but maybe that’s because that’s what Im used to?

Cheers,

Cormac
