Dear Usability Friends,
I am Dieter from Germany, my love and Freelancing work is usability expert
reviews.
Right now I stay in turkey and would love to come back to Ireland, working
in usability area.
My focus has been analysis of websites, some software things.
Projects might be seen in the contact data below.
My interest is also development of test schedules, implementing
theory in companies for usability, game usability - see for example
a start in WoW usability test here
http://wow-usability.formulartest.de/wow%20credits%202.html
( sorry the quality is not the best, but you may see my way of thinking and
abilities, I firstly tried an usability presenting software named
Camtasia here, which is nice.)
I am available for usability jobs in Ireland from the 15.08.2007.
Time scedule is 2-6 month in Dublin, or other irish cities.
I learned expert review business and others through working with
an usability freak at a big german internet agency.
Hope to hear some interesting news from you.
Sorry when I am not able to take part in the discusion so
much in the next weeks, when discussing the usability of interesting
websites
or whatever.
There are a bunch of usability issues, if there will be
a project I would invest time to write impressions down, but if not,
well I got tired by the time to ask if there is an interest in usability
issues
and never got a job & project out of it, escpecially in the last time I
tried
some big companies,
but without a contact you run against a wall when you are not inside.
Even if your recommendations would mean concrete better made
websites and real grow of success.
This is discouraging, even if you love to make things better and
would even give recommendations without high payment,
but if in the end big companies take for granted that users give usability
feedback,
instead of pushing it intellegently they will
not get the qualified one I guess.
I once had a discussion with someone from Microsoft about this,
he was an usability evangelist, but when he can not offer
something interesting, my enthusiastic usability noting of things you simply
see while using products
ends, cause your message will never be preached.
To be part of a usability better up system is for experts normally not
enough,
so if we discuss things here, well if it interesting it is good.
As my focus is not mainly accessibility my usability thoughts
to www.aerlingus.com
* Navigation on the start page right placed is unusal and changing in
subsites
may hinder to learn the structure intuitivley and fast
* no Alt Tags - bad ones with session ID´s and whatever kind of
unstructured text
* no genral search on every page
* sometimes missing Alt Tags at all
* use of the same logos with different linking, air lingus.com logo for
axample leads on the
hotel subsites to the hotel start site even if it is the same logo - the
cognitive coordination of one picture with one link is broken when use
different destinations & links with one logo
* use of old style tables (personally I am fine with that, but it breaks the
design guide of the site I guess and is mostly unusual seen
* not marked 3rd level subnaviagtion - would be easier to enable through a
mark on the link to orientate easier
* hidden flight choice map which would make sense to be presented in a
higher position in information hierachie
* ......
Accessibility (with help from http://webxact3.watchfire.com)
* script - no script informatiion to be provided alternatively
* be readable without stylesheet usage
* lack of provided information about the content of some pictures
* needs more simple language sometimes
* flickering screen when objects rapid change for slow recodnising people
* operational elements without mouse usage nneds to be on the whole page
* good explained and usable site map is missing .......
* use of lnguage identifying code on every page
* ..... there is bunch of mir information while testing with webxact - can
be checked and specified ....
Does accessiblity help the company profit to raise?
* Public relations are only one part of it - I would not agree on the minor
ranking of its effect on the web corporate identiy of a compnay - if you
look up a website, it belongs to a good professional call of a company to be accessible,
* site is easier to understand, navigate and to access for anyone - which is an general advantage
* target group of disabilites is lost if not accessible web site
* in any cae - god public relation or not - it is good to do good things, cause it helps minorities,
is to the benefit of a compnay to take care about this
* when a more accessible website is also a more usable website, than
it is in any case good to make it accessible, cause the quality is higher, the costs most of the time not so huge- when huge costs than better to invest cause the standard of the website is
higher than - there are much general issues who affect usability at all
* .........
Greetings & blessings to Ireland.
Yours Dieter,
