On something of a tangent to "EDF and Emergency Calls",
but not completely unrelated, I recently came across ICE:
In Case of Emergency (ICE) is a program that enables first responders,
such as paramedics, firefighters, and police officers,
to identify victims and contact their next of kin to obtain medical
information,
by looking for emergency contacts in the victims
cell phone address book under the name "ICE".
cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_case_of_emergency
for details.
