[Irl-dean] Dublin Bus "Real Time Passenger Information"

Hi Eamon, Barry,
We asked about these 'live' routes as part of the MAPPED GPS project we were involved in. From what I understand of the pilot system, it was entirely manual; that is, all the times that appeared on the display boards were typed in to the system by hand, rather than anything more sophisticated. As such, it would not be feasible to implement this on a network wide basis.
All the best,
Hugh

Hi Eamon -
Information is pretty sparse. They do mention having run a
"pilot" already:
"In 2001, Dublin Bus implemented an RTPI pilot scheme on the
Lucan and Clondalkin QBCs. The purpose of the pilot scheme was
to evaluate RTPI in one sector of the network prior to
implementing a citywide RTPI scheme under the NDP. Selected
bus stops were equipped with electronic display units. The
information displayed indicated the route number, the
destination and the predicted number of minutes for the bus to
arrive at that stop."
I'm not sure whether the display you saw was part of this
pilot. In any case, they go on to say that:
"The RTPI pilot scheme was developed by a French company, INEO
Systrans. This system will be phased out as a new fleetwide
system is developed."
So the "real" deployment is with a different company entirely.
In any case, I would hope that, in 2008, the full system should
be a good deal more advanced that something original piloted in
2001...
Regards - Barry.
