engineer to make it accessible. however the main problem with this is
that if you have heavy customisation in place future updates to
sharepoint may break these.
I suppose the real message is that Sharepoint is great at its main
tasks such as document management etc. But it should not be used as a
Content Management System if you want an accessible website
There are several alternative CMS including opensource technologies
which I believe will result in a more accessible website.
I am very interested in others point of view on this as well. Have any
developers here had to use sharepoint? What were their experiences?

I had first hand contact with SharePoint a couple of years back whilst =
working
for a major publisher/e-publisher over in <st1:country-region =
w:st=3D"on"><st1:place
w:st=3D"on">England</st1:place></st1:country-region>.<br>
<br>
We evaluated it for running several projects with attached websites that
required pretty high standards. SP was pretty powerful as a =
document
collaboration tool (and we used it for an <a
href=3D"http://www.itil-officialsite.com/">ITIL</a> consultation) but =
its
standards compliance for the web-side of things was dire, even without =
any
specific accessibility requirement. <br>
<br>
When I convinced my employers to take accessibility seriously the =
resulting
audit of the system's output placed it beyond feasible repair. The =
cost
and support implications for the customisation was simply too much.<br>
<br>
As Brendan points out, these things can be ironed out with the right =
expertise
but it is quite a considerable task. At the time we also found =
developers
with the right experience of SP <b><span style=3D'font-weight:bold'>and =
</span></b>a
thorough understanding of accessibility were not in great supply.<br>
<br>
We decided to keep the document management and web CMS separate.<br>
<br>
By the way, if you need the user interface needs to be accessible too - =
let's
just say I didn't actively test this but my feeling was that much of it =
would
fail...badly.<br>
