Thanks for the link, Mark.

The writers of that article conclude that "the survey ... indicates a very
strong favorability toward headings ...". That conclusion supports one of
the changes that was made in WCAG 2.0:
- "Use header elements (eg h1 and h2) to convey document structure and use
them according to specification" was only a Priority 2 checkpoint in WCAG
1.0
- "Using h1-h6 to identify headings" is a technique for a level-A success
criterion (1.3.1, Info and relationships) in WCAG 2.0.

WebAIM has published initial results from its survey of 1121 screen
reader users. See http://webaim.org/projects/screenreadersurvey/. Some
very interesting findings but bear in mind though that the sample was
not controlled, so the self selecting nature of responses means that
results are likely not representative of all screen reader users.
