Has anyone been to the Dublin Transportation Office site to attempt to
participate in the public consultation there? I include their
invitation below.
On the site, you find that the background information you require to
prepare an opinion is contained in massive PDFs stuffed with
colour-coded graphics and gigantic tables, with pages shifting from A4
to A3 and from portrait to landscape willy nilly. A nightmare to print
out, let alone read. And not at the races as far as visually impaired
access is concerned.
I have to confess to having indulged already in a little email
skirmishing with the DTO on the issue: it looks like the consulting
engineers have simply dumped the artwork for their jazzy brochures for
ministerial consumption straight to PDF without considering the
usability and accessibility consequences. The DTO's booboo was to not
put accessibility into the brief for the documentation deliverables.
The consultants would seem to be the main culprits as they have made
no effort whatever to get the material across in any other way, apart
from the PDFs.
If by any strange chance you felt like offering a candid opinion
direct to the DTO's consultants on the accessibility of the background
material, the contact I was conversing with was at dto at rpsgroup.com
The DTO site itself has had a bit of accessibility preparation work,
as is the case with many governmental sites, but what use is that when
the content it hosts is bundled in non-accessible formats?
