Hi all,
The website for the Eden Project [1] has added functionality that uses
simple pictures to explain words to users. It uses the "Widgit" system of
graphics. The users can hover their mouse cursors over certain words, and
pop-ups of one or more images will appear to help the users to understand
those words. For example, when a user hovers the mouse cursor over the word
"Amazon", a cartoon-like picture of a river with trees on either side will
appear beside the cursor. The functionality relies on the mouse, and (as
far as I can tell) Flash. The images have no alternative text. It will be
very useful for some users, but not for others. It's aimed primarily at
people with "a poor understanding of the English language". The website
owners have explained this functionality in a blog entry [2].
