I finally got round to looking at an example of this. If you're looking to rely on it, it's terrible!
Go to http://www.youtube.com/user/StanfordUniversity#p/u/1/Xt09jVssi7k. Click on the CC button below and to the right of the video and choose Transcribe Audio.
He's speaking quite clearly but the results of the speech to text are more or less useless out of the box. They're actually quite amusing in places. It even manages to translate the musical intro as "you".
However, I wonder whether it would cut down the work involved, by creating an editable first draft as part of an 'automated' rather than an 'automatic' caption production process.
